The Carpet Gardens, Eastbourne, England
This is Eastbourne, East Sussex, England. The postcard shows a photo of The Carpet Gardens on the sea front.
The Carpet Gardens date back to about 1850 when they were first owned and maintained by the newly built Burlington Hotel. They were, however, then just a piece of grassed land with a hedge. Towards the end of the 19th century they were sold to the Council under the condition that the view of the sea from the hotel would not be obstructed. The gardens were originally modelled on Oriental patterns, hence their name.
