Whitby has a combined maritime, mineral and tourist heritage, and is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey where Caedmon, the earliest English poet, lived.

Memories for many: Butlin's at Filey. No longer in existence but the postcard shows how it looked back in the mid 1970s. Butlin's started in the 1930s and Billy Butlin's aim was to provide affordable holidays for ordinary British families. But times change and with cheaper air fares in the 1980s many Butlin's camps were forced to close.
