Whitby, North Yorkshire

A 1980s postcard of Whitby, North Yorkshire with the picture taken from the Upper Bridge. The seaside town is situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk. Whitby has a combined maritime, mineral and tourist heritage, and is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey where Caedmon, the earliest English poet, lived.

Memories for many: Butlin's at Filey. No longer in existence but the postcard shows how it looked back in the mid 1970s. Butlin's started in the 1930s and Billy Butlin's aim was to provide affordable holidays for ordinary British families. But times change and with cheaper air fares in the 1980s many Butlin's camps were forced to close.
